How to Find the BPM of a Song (Free, No Signup)

Setting a metronome, building a setlist, transcribing, matching two tracks: it all starts with one number, the song's BPM (beats per minute). Here are three ways to find it, quickest first, plus the one mistake that catches almost everyone.

What BPM actually tells you

BPM is how many beats land in a minute. A slow ballad sits around 60 to 75. Most pop and rock lives between 100 and 130. A lot of dance music sits around 120 to 128. Once you know the number you can set a metronome, program a drum machine, or line a track up against another at the same tempo.

Method 1: Tap it out

The fastest way to get close is to tap along and count.

Tap your foot or a finger steadily with the music. Count the taps in 15 seconds and multiply by four. That's your rough BPM. Plenty of metronome apps have a "tap tempo" button that does the averaging for you. It's handy for a quick read, but it drifts a beat or two, so it's not the one to trust when you need to be exact.

Method 2: Let your DAW work it out

If the song is already in a DAW, the software can usually estimate the tempo. GarageBand and Logic have Smart Tempo, which analyzes an imported file. Ableton estimates BPM when you warp a clip, and lets you correct it. FL Studio, Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase and Studio One all have tempo detection or beat mapping.

It's accurate. The catch is you have to open a project, import the file, and dig through menus, which is a lot of work if all you wanted was a number.

Method 3: Use a free detector

The quickest accurate option is to let a tool listen to the file and read the tempo off it.

Watch the doubled or halved number

This is the one that trips people up. Automatic detectors sometimes report a tempo that's exactly double or half the real one. A 75 BPM track shows up as 150, or a 140 shows up as 70. The detector locked onto a different rhythmic layer, the eighth notes instead of the quarters, say.

A couple of quick sanity checks. Tap along and compare: if your natural foot-tap is about half the number on screen, the real tempo is probably the lower one. Anything over about 180 for a normal pop or rock song is usually a doubled reading, so halve it. Anything under about 70 for an up-tempo song is usually halved, so double it.
