Setting a metronome, building a setlist, transcribing, matching two tracks: it all starts with one number, the song's BPM (beats per minute). Here are four ways to find it, quickest first, plus the one mistake that catches almost everyone.
What BPM actually tells you
BPM is how many beats land in a minute. Once you know the number you can set a metronome, program a drum machine, or line a track up against another at the same tempo. Typical ranges look like this:
- Ballads: 60 to 80
- Hip hop: 80 to 100
- Pop and rock: 100 to 130
- House and disco: 115 to 130
- Drum and bass: 160 to 180
- Punk: 150 to 200
So yes, 120 BPM counts as a moderate, danceable tempo rather than a fast one. It only starts feeling fast above roughly 140.
Method 1: Look it up in a database
If the song is a released track, the fastest route is a BPM database like Tunebat or GetSongBPM. Type the title, read the number, done. Two caveats. Database entries are submitted or auto-detected and are sometimes wrong, often by exactly double or half (more on that below). And the database only knows released songs. Your own backing track, a live recording, a cover version or a mix you just bounced is not in there, which is when you need one of the next three methods.
Method 2: Tap it out
The fastest way to get close is to tap along and count.
Tap your foot or a finger steadily with the music. Count the taps in 15 seconds and multiply by four. That's your rough BPM. Method 3: Let your DAW work it out
If the song is already in a DAW, the software can usually estimate the tempo. GarageBand and Logic have Smart Tempo, which analyzes an imported file. Ableton estimates BPM when you warp a clip, and lets you correct it. FL Studio, Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase and Studio One all have tempo detection or beat mapping.
It's accurate. The catch is you have to open a project, import the file, and dig through menus, which is a lot of work if all you wanted was a number.
