What tap tempo is for
Tap tempo turns your own sense of rhythm into a number. Tap a key or click a button in time with a beat, and it measures the gap between taps and converts that into beats per minute. It is the fastest way to get a BPM when there is no file to analyze: a song playing on the radio, a drummer counting off in a rehearsal room, or a tempo you only have in your head.
How to get an accurate reading
- Tap on the beat itself, not on subdivisions or off-beats.
- Keep tapping past four taps. Eight settle the average and smooth out any one uneven gap.
- Use Shift or Space rather than clicking with a mouse or trackpad. A click carries a little extra hit-test and repaint delay that a held key does not, and at faster tempos that delay is enough to throw off the reading.
- If you stop for more than two seconds, the count resets, so a fresh set of taps starts clean.

How accurate is tapping compared to a file-based detector?
It depends on how steady your taps are. A handful of careful taps on a clear beat lands within a beat per minute or two, which is close enough for rehearsing or setting a metronome. A file-based detector is more consistent because it is not limited by human timing.
Why does the number jump around on my first few taps?
The very first tap has nothing to compare against, and the second only gives one gap to measure. The reading settles as more taps come in, which is why four gets you close and eight settles it.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen button directly. The Shift and Space shortcuts are for a physical keyboard, so they apply on desktop and laptop only.
